One of the largest financial institutions in Canada, established in 1817, BMO® Financial Group is highly diversified and works with millions of personal, commercial, corporate and institutional customers through its operating groups: Personal and Commercial Banking Canada, Personal and Commercial Banking U.S., Private Client Group and BMO Capital Markets.

The Project:

In 2010, agile, iterative, data-centric development was not even on the minds of the BMO EDW team. What they did face was a waterfall approach to data acquisition that was proving too expensive and too time consuming.

Over a two-week period, the BMO team re-invented their delivery process from the bottom-up. The goal: to be 50 percent faster and 50 percent less expensive. The result of this initiative was a new agile, iterative delivery approach.

Their first program-wide implementation of their new iterative approach delivered an $8MM project for $3.5MM.
In 2011 they took their process to a new level, collapsing a dozen data projects into one EDW Data Factory. One team, under one manager, taking a data-centric approach to delivery. This approach is turning the standard project-centric approach to delivery on its head, and realizing significant new flexibility and significantly less overhead.
