The Need for Data Democratization and No-Code/Low-Code Tools

Data democratization is the ongoing process of making sure everyone in an organization not only has access to data but can also understand it and make meaningful, informed decisions with it, regardless of their level of technical expertise.

Many organizations have great ideas about how to automate processes or create applications to improve business procedures, but they lack the technical skill to execute their ideas. Performing tasks manually without code can be very laborious and time-consuming, wasting valuable resources.

As a result, many organizations are adopting low-code platforms like Microsoft’s Power Platform to share data across their organization and resolve simple challenges, with or without technical expertise: to automate processes, develop applications, analyze data and create bots.

What Is Power Platform?

Power Platform is a set of low-code software applications developed by Microsoft to create flexible and efficient business solutions. Each of the tools in Microsoft’s Power Platform are designed to easily integrate with each other, as well as with Microsoft 365, Azure, and hundreds of other apps.

Organizations who implement Power Platform see cost and time savings from lowering development costs, as well as making time-consuming business processes more efficient.

Below is a brief overview of each of the tools available for your organization to leverage:

Power Apps: Act on Data

Traditionally, a large team is needed to program sometimes very small applications – this may include business analysts, project managers, front-and-back-end developers, and in some cases, full-stack developers. Alternatively, with Power Apps, users can easily deploy drag-and-drop features to quickly develop and bring simple applications to market.

Power BI: Visualize Data

Power BI is a business intelligence service that helps organizations visualize and analyze their data via dashboards to uncover latent insights. Power BI helps make complex information easily and quickly understandable and provides access to data-informed decision-making to technical and non-technical audiences alike.

Power Automate: Automate Data

Power Automate allows organizations to automate repetitive or administrative tasks. It can trigger workflows, notifications, and subprocesses, among other things, that run in the background.

Power Virtual Agents: Create Bots

Power Virtual Agents allows users to build AI-powered bots that can perform a variety of services – ranging from answering simple FAQs, to having more complex dialogues with customers in multiple languages.

How Can My Organization Use Power Platform?

Power Platform is beneficial in a variety of use cases. Common ones include:

  • Asset management – e.g., tracking requests for company laptops in Power Apps, and analyzing process efficiency with Power BI
  • Employee work schedules – Power Platform can be used to track employee timesheets, absences and leaves
  • Employee onboarding – Power Apps can keep track of onboarding tasks and provide resources to new employees
  • Meeting notes capture – Power Apps can be used to capture meeting notes and summarize upcoming meeting schedules for employees
